The SABR front office has announced the dates and hotel for the 2009 National Convention here in Washington. Mark July 30 – August 2 on your calendars and the JW Marriott Pennsylvania Avenue as the host hotel.
As indicated in the latest issue of the SABR Bulletin, advanced booking was necessary in order to get a reduced hotel rate. The good news is attendees can plan well ahead. The bad news is there’s a chance the Nationals will not be home during that time (If not, the Orioles likely would be).
The JW Marriott is a very nice hotel with a fabulous location in the heart of the city and very convenient to Metro and The Mall. The hotel is located in the vibrant Penn Quarter, a revitalized area that sports the Verizon Center, The Newseum, ESPN Zone, Ford’s Theater, Warner Theatre, the International Spy Museum and a great selection of restaurants (as if you'll have time for such things...)
Sacrificing the certainty of seeing the Nationals' games for a reduced rate and a prime location will certainly raise more than a few eyebrows among the SABR faithful. On the other hand, something good is gained by securing a first-rate location. My first SABR convention was San Francisco in 1998. In looking back, I still give it high marks. But the site, south of the city, did take something away.
The 2009 Convention will certainly offer the benefits of location.
See you there!
