The Hardball Times has reviewed a new edition of The Sun Field, a previously out-of-print novel by Heywood C. Broun, published in 1923. Darryl Brock writes the introduction.
The book is published by Rvive Books, whose mission is "to return to print some of the lost and classic works of American literature and nonfiction." Evidently, they have no website yet but the book is available through Amazon and others.
Broun covered the Yankees and the Giants. He wrote more than a dozen books and won the Hall of Fame's 1970 J.G. Taylor Spink Award. His son, Heywood Hale Broun, accepted the announcement in 1976.
Broun's reporting and writing began in New York in 1908, and continued until his death in 1939. Historian William Burgess describes him as "a violent rooter" for the Giants.
Broun penned the famous "look of eagles" description of John McGraw's young players. He also founded and presided over the American Newspaper Guild (now called the Newspaper Guild).
