Danged if I didn't miss the first 20 minutes of the Giants last night, the MLB Network's preview of them for their "30 Clubs in 30 Days."
I did manage to catch a lightly-dressed Hazel Mae interviewing Tim Lincecum. Interesting juxtaposition. My wife will be proud to know I went with the Kid.
They did a good job looking at the Giants history, showing clips as far back as Matty and the dead ball boys, Bonds home run trotting a la The Natural, Russ Hodges pioneering call of The Shot. I was impressed with their All-Time Team too. I thought they would skew to the TV era but let's give them some type of SABR award for a balanced team.
1B - McCovey
2B - Frisch
3B - Williams
SS- Jackson
LF - Bonds
CF - Mays
RF - Ott
C - Bresnahan
SP - Mathewson
Can't argue with that although Jeff Kent fans (all three of them) sure do have a gripe.
They also used Baseball Prospectus for the predicted standings but Greg Amsinger and cast relied on the old school thoughts.
I don't know, maybe the Giants are the team that surprises this year...
Frankie Frisch isn't a bad choice, neither is Kent, but people forget that the greatest right handed hitter of all time, Rogers Hornsby, played second for the Giants in 1927. His line that year was Average.361, HRs 26, RBI 149, slugging .586 and he was a slick fielder too.
For catcher, Buck Ewing was considered the greatest player of his generation.
First base, you can't go wrong with McCovey, but isn't it funny that we can't seem to find a first baseman now, when the Giants are the franchise of Bill Terry, the last National leager to hit 400, Johnny Mize, Orlando Cepeda and Will Clark.

PS,
I agree about Buck Ewing. When you read the papers of the day, he was highly thought of.
I'm hoping Ewing will be in Peter Morris new book - Catcher: How the Man Behind the Plate Became an American Folk Hero.
Giants First Baseman - good point and let's not forget about Roger Connor.
Thanks.
