Yesterday we looked at Camp Barker, the Contraband Hospital in Washington during the Civil War. To my knowledge, the only one in Alexandria was L’Ouverture Hospital, which was located in the blocks of Duke and Prince, and Payne and West, with the HQ at 217 S. Payne.
In a classic case of right under my nose, I found out earlier this week that the L’Ouverture Hospital had a predecessor near the corner of S. Washington and Wolfe.
Tim Dennee has a wonderful write-up on this contraband hospital at the Freedmen’s Cemetery website. And I flat out missed Derrick Perkins piece on it last year.
I took the photo yesterday. It’s interesting to note the sign in the building to the left.
Loved seeing the buidling as it is today. Thanks for posting it.
