Happy New Year everybody!
2014 promises to be a banner and busy one for history buffs and event planners with milestone commemorations for the Civil War, World Wars I and II, and the Vietnam War.
Sports-wise, the Winter Olympics take place in February, and the 20th World Cup will be played this summer in Brazil.
In pop culture, it was 50 years ago four mop tops from England helped kick off the “British Invasion.” In April 1964, the top five songs on Billboard’s charts were by the Beatles.
For politicos, the mid-term elections will be essential news. For travelers, the 50th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall will bring emotional gatherings and China will show off the world’s tallest building.
On a personal note, I remember 1964 was the year when my family and I took a trip to New York City in 1964 to see the World’s Fair. Greensboro was no backwater, but my eyes got a lot wider with that trip and experience. The details are fuzzy so maybe I can fill in some details.
Good luck to all and get those hash tags ready. 2014 is going to be a big one.
