Yesterday I posted a portion of an early map of Northern Virginia, more specifically, the southeastern part of Fairfax County ("Map of Fairfax County c 1745-1748, perhaps by Daniel Jennings," Library of Congress).
The text of the book, "Fairfax County, Virginia, A History," has a brief explanation of each of these roads. Let’s see if we can sort this out.
On the Map
Runs (I rotated the map, north is left to right) from the Occoquan River, crosses over Pohick Creek, Accotink Creek, Dogue Run, turns to the northeast, crosses over Little Hunting Creek, continues to turn northward, and ends at Great Hunting Creek.
Runs from Colchester (Old Colchester Road) to the intersection of Route 1. Continues along Route 1 towards Alexandria. At Penn Daw, goes along N. King Highway, past Huntington Metro to Telegraph Road, then under Beltway towards Duke Street.
The Potomac Path ran from the crossing of the Occoquan to Great Hunting Creek. It was made to better serve the Potomac plantations.
"Back Road," "Western Road"
On the map
Runs from the Occoquan, crosses over Pohick Creek, forks to the left, runs over Accotink Creek, Dogue Run, Little Hunting Creek, ends at Great Hunting Creek.
Runs from Colchester (Old Colchester Road) to the intersection of Route 1. Continues along Telegraph Road to Beltway.
An Indian trail that ran from the Occoquan to Great Hunting Creek.
"Old Fairfax Road"
On the map
Runs westward from Great Hunting Creek. (This was the one I originally thought was Little River Turnpike. Should have remembered that turnpikes were not layed out until the 19th century. Plus the direction is southwest).
Franconia Road/Old Keene Mill Road
The book doesn't say but a good guess is this ran from Ravensworth.
"Ravensworth Rolling Road"
On the map
Crosses over Accotink, runs northward.
Not sure, possibly Backlick.
Branched off the Potomac Path just after Accotink. Ran to the Ravensworth plantation.
At his blog, Dixie Pig, Scott Surovell has posted two articles from The Mount Vernon Gazette. Michael K. Bohn is the author.
One thing that has me puzzled concerns the road out of Colchester. The Old Colchester Road today runs northeastward then turns eastward. The old map shows it running pretty much eastward from the get go.
