I haven’t had much time for reading so far this year, but the one I am reading now, “I Am Abraham,” is deliciously good. Glowing reviews and my interest in Lincoln put me on to Jerome Charyn’s latest historical novel. It is my early favorite for book of the year.
Also took a look at the upcoming titles, and noticed three. One stands out as a no-doubt number one best seller and producing long lines for the author’s signature. The second is the first biography on the subject in years. The third fits the common thread of the first two – the greatest of leaders, but also someone who raises or raised strong feelings on both sides of the issues.
The three books are:
Hillary Rodham Clinton New Memoir
Clouds of Glory: The Life and Legend of Robert E. Lee by Michael Korda
Mover and Shaker: Walter O'Malley, the Dodgers, and Baseball's Westward Expansion by Andy McCue.
The O’Malley book has a "Look Inside." I learned he grew up a Giants fan. McCue notes “he remained a Giants fan well into adulthood.”
Paul Dickson reviews the book, calling it fair and balanced.
If you’re a Giants fan and have not read anything on their move west, this sounds like a decent start. Stoneham wanted to move to Minneapolis, but O’Malley convinced him to go to the Golden State.
The Dickson review piece notes he is working on a biography of Leo Durocher. A lot of juicy material there and Willie said he always loved Leo.
