Based in Norfolk, the tall ship will spend two days in Alexandria. Tours are open to the public from noon to 5 pm.
The vessel spans 126 feet and is a re-creation of its namsake, the last pure sailing vessel used by the Virginia Pilot Association between 1917 and 1926.
2nd Mate Ryan Moore told me the original Virginia was used to transfer captains to ships near the mouth of the Potomac River.
Alexandria's historic waterfront plans include the recommendation of a permanent tall ship at the foot of King Street. The seaport once rivaled Baltimore in terms of cargo and ship building.
Welcome captain and crew!
