The Harris Teeter is not the first large building at the corner of N. St. Asaph and Madison. In 1948, the Alexandria roller rink, also known as the Alexandria Arena, opened across the street on the northeast corner.
Local Kicks has a good article on its history, which includes concerts – everything from Guy Lombardo to Janis Joplin and Black Sabbath. The Doors also played there, featuring, of course, the late Jim Morrison, who spent three of his teenage years living in Alexandria.
Sounds like a great candidate for an historical marker!
