As charter members of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Roberta and I received a copy of their 2017 calendar (still waiting for a Grand Opening reserved seat next to Oprah..)
Going back as far as 1885, some black teams called themselves Giants. This became an easy way for fans to know a black team was playing.
One thing I have never understood is the origin of this nicknaming.
A SABR member once told me they chose Giants because the NY Giants were a successful and recognizable team. But both the NYG and at least one black team (Cuban Giants) first started calling themselves that in 1885. The NY Giants did not gain glory until after winning the pennant in 1888 and 1889.
Oh well, what matters is this museum and the giant stories it will soon tell. We’re even hearing the good Lord is impressed with all the requests for good weather…
