Didn’t see anything on Spring Bank, but we know Quanders still live in the Penn-Daw area and near West Potomac High School. Quander Road is named for the family, as well as Quander Road School.
I have a brief mention of the family in my book.
Skirting the site of the Spring Bank property, Quander Road pays tribute to the Quander family. Charles Henry Quander, born in Maryland, was one of the first African Americans to settle at Spring Bank. After his emancipation from the Hayfield Plantation in Fairfax County, he earned money and bought parcels of land south of the Spring Bank manor.
The Quander farm sold milk to Alexandria and Mount Vernon. As Charlotte Brown (“Groveton,” Images of America) points out, Charles willed portions of his land to his children.
And there is a great hope that when the Kings Crossing retail center is redeveloped, interpretive marking for the Quanders will be included.
