It’s always been strange why DC United, the first dynasty in the MLS and possessed with a set of rabid and loyal fans, was among the last to nab a new stadium.
Looks like the team is
now set, with a tentative deal worked out for a new stadium in SW DC.
Kevin Reichard has a good write up on the implications this deal will have for RFK Stadium. It’s one of the few remaining cookie cutters and with no tenant, it’s destiny is a wrecking ball.
The southwest site, about two blocks from Nationals Park, should work just fine. What we would like to see is a renaming of “Buzzard’s Point.” Our recommendation is “Point Pearl,” a nod to the ship that slipped away into the night in 1848, as a form of protest against slavery. I believe the exact spot is not known, but it is somewhere down there on the point below.
