Mario Chiodo’s sculpture for the Contrabands and Freedmen Cemetery Memorial arrived in Alexandria this morning on a flat-bed 18-wheeler from California.
A small crowd gathered along the 1000 block of North Washington Street to watch the once-in-a-lifetime moment. As the tense workers watched and guided, a tall crane lifted the massive piece of bronze over the park’s wrought-iron fence.
Yours truly happened by and snapped these photos.
