Some touching moments took place yesterday at the A’s-Jay’s game on MLBTV. Geddy Lee is arguably the Blue Jays most recognizable fan. There he was one again on Sunday, long hair, baseball cap, and sitting in the killer seat behind home plate he has had for many years.
Lee became a baseball fan in the 1970s. Soundcheck for the band was at 4, so he had time to watch the Cubs on cable when they were at home. Through the years, Lee has rubbed shoulders with major leaguers, held friendships with players such as Warren Cromartie, played in Fantasy Leagues, collected autographed baseballs and memorabilia, thrown out the ceremonial pitch for Opening Day in his hometown Toronto, and sang the Canadian National Anthem at the All-Star Game in Baltimore.
All of this old hat for Lee followers like myself, but yesterday gave his fans and viewers some new and special memories.
Geddy has had a variety of seat mates through the years. He usually keeps score and is always intently focused on the game. Yesterday broke from that norm.
I’m still not sure who was to his left sitting in his other season ticket seat, but putting two and two together, you could tell it was someone special.
Out of respect for Lee, I edited out the person. Still, the images speak for themselves. I think the elder rock statesman has a new pal, someone who will see his love of the game and learn about its finer points. And by all appearances, I think baseball and the Blue Jays just got another fan...
