There might be nothing more emblematic of the Fourth of July than a small community parade. Yesterday, about 50 residents of Groveton, a suburban neighborhood about two miles south of Alexandria, waved flags and strolled along three streets in the heart of the neighborhood.
The Fairfax County Fire Department participated, bringing excitement for the kids and a big slash of red to the streets of Collard, Arundel and Ridge.
Charlotte Brown, Groveton’s historian, author of "Groveton," Images of America, and long-time resident, provided this photograph of the Groveton Block Party on July 4, 1967.
The Weather Committee came through with splendid conditions, enjoyed by all the participants and a smattering of spectators, including pets and children. Some were long-time residents of the neighborhood, whose suburban era began in the 1930s. New residents in recent years have given the community a fresh look and how about those beautifully maintained lawns.
Yesterday everyone put down their cell phones and chore lists. It was all about having patriotic fun and rekindling a summer-time tradition on top of Beacon Hill.
Happy Fourth Groveton! Great job everybody!
